Learning Style Checklist

What is your child's learning style?  Some child absorb information best when it is visual, others when they experience information with activity and still others when they hear it. Learning styles differ and children typically show a preference for a particular mode of learning. Checklists like this one can help you and your child discover how they learn best.

A Collection of Literacy Links

Crissy Wade, now a 3rd grade teacher sent me this link and I think it's a nice central location to find literacy resources for at home practice. It comes from a school district website in Tempe, AZ.  Literacy Links

Ms. Wade has her Masters in Technology in Education and is a very proactive educational technology advocate.

Flash Cards

Flash Cards can be fun when you turn them into a game like concentration.  Here is a link to a website full of flash card printables complete with images.  It is a British site so some spellings may differ. Using flash cards is also a great way to improve vocabulary.

Parent Resources, Books, Websites and More

Parents have a vested interest in their child's education and it helps to obtain current information about educational trends and research.  I read an interesting book by Daniel Pink called, A Whole New Mind.  Although it was not specifically designed to address parents it addresses critical 21st century skills that you need to develop in your children. The bottom line is that right brain is the new left.  In other words, creative problem solving and inventive new perspectives will generate the tools we need to succeed in the next century.

Reading Rockets, Your Tax Dollars at Work

Fortunately as the web matures so does the quality of educational resources. One of my favorite resources is Reading Rockets.  It is a resource for parents and teachers supplying current research based articles, video and audio podcasts by experts in the filed and a deep well of creative instructional ideas for home and classroom.  I believe that all parents home school their children.  It just comes with the role.  The more informed you are about educational issues the better you can advocate for your child.
